Fixes

Crashes and black screens

A crash with no message is sortable. Match the moment it dies, then change one setting.

Symptom to test

Black screen as soon as you launch on Windows 11

Issue #1649 specifically reports problems after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2. Issue #1573 reports a black-screen hang with SingleCoreAffinity=1, including later fullscreen-related reports. Use the author's current release, back up the INI, then test SingleCoreAffinity=0 and a windowed mode separately. Neither issue proves that every black screen has this cause.

Freeze on the loading screen

Issue #2330 describes intermittent freezes entering garages, shops, races, or saving. The reporter says it also happens without mods and that affinity changes did not help. On 10 October 2026 the maintainer said a fix was made but a test build would follow; that comment is not proof of a published fix. Removing mods is useful isolation, but one successful launch does not identify the cause of an intermittent fault.

Crash only after Extra Options

Back up the scripts folder, then temporarily move only the ExOpts ASI and its INI out of it. Do not rename the shared scripts folder, which can disable the widescreen fix and other plugins too. Compare repeated launches before restoring options one at a time. See Extra Options.

Continue with Widescreen keys, Clean install.

Questions people ask

Should I set compatibility mode to XP?

Compatibility mode is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix. First back up the INI and change only one documented setting at a time. This guide has no first-hand test result to claim.

A texture pack made the load screen hang. Now what?

Remove the pack, including any TexMod or loader it added. Confirm a clean 1.2 plus widescreen launch, then add the pack back alone.

Does this cover the disc prompt?

No. A disc prompt is the insert-disc page. A black screen after the prompt disappears is this page.
