Add custom cars with Binary

Binary is a named data editor, and Binarius is its fork. Both support scripted data editing; they are not interchangeable with every car installer. The separate pauliquib/nfsu2-addcars project converts replacement cars into add-ons using Binarius libraries and specifically requires Linux with Wine, NFSU2 1.2, and Unlimiter v4. Its README says a Windows port is untested.

A careful first car

  1. Copy the game directory.
  2. Read the car author's prerequisites and use the specified editor, script, and Unlimiter release. Test the base game first.
  3. For the Linux addcars tool, meet its Wine and runtime requirements, run scan, and review the proposed names before installing. Do not present its shell commands as a Windows GUI workflow.
  4. Test one car in a copied game folder before adding more. If it does not appear or load, restore the backup and check the pack's supported modes and requirements.

What this page will not do

It will not host car archives or list pirate model rips. A car that uses a manufacturer's name still has to come from a pack you trust. Stock cars and their real unlock races are on the car list, which does not need Binary at all.

Questions people ask

Are Binary and Binarius the same tool?

Binary is an editor for Black Box NFS data files. Binarius explicitly identifies itself as a fork of Binary with additional features. They are related projects, not two names for a generic car-install procedure. Use the editor and script version the car author specifies.

Will a new car appear in career?

Only if the pack and Unlimiter say so. Many packs are quick-race only. The stock unlock order stays on the car list.

What do I back up?

The archive you are about to overwrite, plus the save folder. The add-car notes say to keep the original files.
